For Burlington senior golfer Justin Meseberg, making state was a dream come true.
But it doesn’t mean he was satisfied after two sub-par rounds Monday at Tuesday at University Ridge in Verona for the WIAA state golf tournament.
Meseberg shot an 83 Monday before tallying an 87 Tuesday to finish low on the leaderboard, but he understands sometimes you’re just not on your game.
“It was fun,” Meseberg said. “But I had two very poor rounds. Nothing was going for me. My swing just wasn’t there.”
Meseberg said he sank a few 15-foot putts to salvage decent scores on some holes, but overall it wasn’t his best performance.
Arrowhead won the Division 1 championship with a two-day total of 602, four strokes better than Marquette.
Lake Geneva Badger was the best area finisher, taking eighth with a 644.
Piercen Hunt of Arrowhead won the individual title with a 141.
The top area golfer was Union Grove’s Eric Chambers, who tallied a 158.
For Meseberg, it was an opportunity to play well on a pretty manageable course with favorable conditions. But he said he was disappointed that he shot two “pretty abnormal” scores.
Though he didn’t play his best, Meseberg and head coach Wayne Herrick were able to bond over dinner Monday night.
Meseberg, a four-time first team all-Southern Lakes selection, said this past year was the most fun, especially the chemistry built with the team and Herrick.
He plans to golf for fun at as many courses as possible in the future, and in the fall he will attend Milwaukee School of Engineering, where he will major in construction management.
Meseberg said he hopes to one day be a project manager for a construction company.
Ludwig’s best season ends
A junior lefty on the Burlington tennis squad, Jacob Ludwig saw his impressive state run end June 1 at the WIAA Division 1 state tennis tournament at Nielsen Stadium at UW-Madison.
Ludwig (18-8) ran into Stevens Point’s Jon Peck, who beat him in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Peck lost in the next round to the fifth-place finisher.
Burlington coach Ken Savaglia said it was the first time Ludwig has played another lefty this season.
“He struggled a bit with the spin,” Savaglia said of Ludwig. “Peck was very aggressive and took the net quite a bit and we couldn’t find the passing shot.”
“The tournament was not too big for him, he just played a good player and he couldn’t get it going in time.”
Savaglia said he fully expects a return trip for Ludwig next season.
