For whatever reason, the Catholic Central girls volleyball team did not make life easy on itself Saturday at the ’Topper Invite.
While the Lady ’Toppers went 5-0 and won their home tournament, they also went to the maximum three sets in four of their five matches.
“Overall, (I’m) really happy we were able to win our tournament,” said coach MaeMae Oberhofer. “My team had a solid offensive day, which is really nice to see since we have been working hard on improving that aspect.”
Junior Maggie Smith had another solid outing for Catholic Central, finishing with a team-high 39 kills and adding five service aces, nine solo blocks – and play in all six rotations.
Megan Wadsworth added 31 kills, while Kelly Gould had 96 assists. Amanda Koenen led Catholic Central with 11 solo blocks, while Wadsworth added another six, and Bekah Shellberg had 36 digs.
Ali Hocking had 12 aces and Gould seven to add to the Hilltoppers’ serving statistics.
In the five rounds, Catholic Central defeated Willams Bay 25-16, 25-13; Union Grove 23-25, 25-16, 15-10; Waterford 17-25, 25-19, 15-13; and Fort Atkinson 25-21, 22-25, 15-2.
The Lady ’Toppers made the swept through the Kenosha private schools last week, downing Kenosha Christian Life 25-21, 25-12, 25-19 and Kenosha St. Joseph 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.
In the Christian Life match, Smith had 10 kills, while Wadsworth added eight and Koenen seven. Koenen also had four solo blocks and one block assist, while Gould had 33 assists and Shellberg 20 digs.
In the St. Joe’s match, Smith led the team with 12 kills, while Wadsworth had nine. Koenen finished with six solo blocks and four block assists.
