As far as facing the best goes, the Catholic Central High School certainly didn’t shy away from anyone last week.
The Lady ‘Toppers lost in four set to defending WIAA Division 3 state champions Racine St. Catherine’s Oct. 11 at home, winning the first set before losing the next three.
It was a similar situation Saturday at the Midwest Classic Conference tournament at The Prairie School, as the Lady ’Toppers pushed St. Cat’s again before losing 28-26, 25-20.
“It was really nice to see the team finish the season strong,” said CCHS coach MaeMae Oberhofer.
Catholic Central opened the day with a 25-13, 25-14 win over Greendale Martin Luther, then beat Kenosha St. Joseph 25-11, 25-20 in the semifinals.
“Both times lost, but both times played them well,” said Oberhofer. “They’re a solid Division 2 team. They do a lot of things well.
“We played them well defensively,” the coach added. “We pushed them to the top of the mountain, but we just couldn’t push our way down.”
Maggie Smith led the Lady ’Toppers with 18 kills at the tournament, while Megan Wadsworth added 14. Kelly Gould had a team-high 46 assists, while Bekah Shellberg had 19 digs and Britte Schneider 15.
Catholic Central had a good day blocking as well. Gould had five block assists, while Wadsworth had four block assists. Smith had five solo blocks and one block assists. Ali Hocking finished with six aces, while Smith and Gould added three each.
Against St. Cat’s earlier in the week, CCHS got 11 kills by Wadsworth, seven from Smith and six from Schneider. Schneider also had two aces and seven digs.
Oberhofer praised the play of Schneider.
“She played very well for us,” the coach said. “She made great hitting decisions and served aggressively and played solid defense.”
