For Catholic Central High School girls basketball coach Jeff Behrens, the 2012-13 season will be a work in progress.
“We’re a very young team with just three returning lettermen, so I expect that we’ll struggle early in the season,” said Behrens. “But I’ve seen a lot of progress through our first couple of weeks in practice and our scrimmage, so if we keep working, I think we’ll be ready for tournament time.”
The leaders of the young team will be seniors Kelsey Robers and Ali Wiemer, as well as junior Sophie Foote.
“These three ladies provide a nice core group for our team,” Behrens said. “They’ve played a lot over the years, work hard and play strong defense.
“They all have shown the ability to score and will be counted on to do more of that this year.”
The underclassmen who round out the team will need to get their feet wet on the varsity level. Natalie Rach, who saw some varsity time during the postseason last year, is expected to contribute early for the Lady ’Toppers, and will lead a group of sophomores that also includes Sam Milligan, Ellie Czerwinski and Tori Kempken.
Another youngster is freshman Bridgette Wright.
Behrens said the effort right now will focus on fundamentals in practice in order to become a better team.
The conference will be loaded again, with The Prairie School, Shoreland Lutheran, Whitefish Bay Dominican and Racine St. Catherine’s all having good teams. State-qualifying Heritage Christian also returns with its entire lineup.
The Lady ’Toppers started their season Nov. 20 with a 60-24 loss to Wilmot – the preseason favorite in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Wilmot posted 25 points in the second quarter to take a lead it would never surrender.
