The Catholic Central High School girls atoned for two recent losses with a 48-22 non-conference victory Jan. 26 at home against Williams Bay Faith Christian.

The Lady Hilltoppers’ defense keyed the victory. Catholic Central (4-11) limited the Eagles (4-9) to 10 in the first half and 12 in the third quarter. Catholic Central did not permit Faith Christian any points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Hilltoppers led 14-4 after the first quarter and 24-10 at halftime. Catholic Central outscored the Eagles 24-12 in the second half.

Catholic Central’s Laura Klein led all scorers with a game-high 15 points. Bridget Bittman added seven.

The Lady Hilltoppers lost 66-19 Jan. 22 in a Metro Classic game at home against Racine St. Catherine’s and 48-18 Jan. 20 in a Metro Classic game at Racine Prairie.

“In both losses, to Prairie and to St Cat’s, we struggled to take care of the ball,” coach Suzy Bittman said. “We are not executing in games the ball handling skills we have proven in practice or in games prior to the Christmas break.

Because of those turnovers – many unforced – we faced huge deficits going into halftime of each game, and Prairie and St Cat’s capitalized on our mistakes.”

The Lady Hilltoppers trailed St. Catherine’s (11-4, 7-2 Greater Metro) 37-6 at halftime and trailed Prairie (6-9, 3-6 Greater Metro) 25-6 at halftime.

“Despite that, the girls continued to play hard throughout the second half and never gave up, which is a credit to their character,” Suzy Bittman said.

Prairie outscored Catholic Central 23-12 in the second half. St. Catherine’s outscored the Lady Hilltoppers 29-13 in the second half.

Catholic Central plays Kenosha St. Joseph (12-2, 9-0 Greater Metro) Thursday at home in a Greater Metro contest. The Lady Hilltoppers play at Whitefish Bay Dominican (11-4, 8-1 Greater Metro) Saturday in a Greater Metro matchup.
