Led by Jeff Stemper, who recently committed to play at UW-Green Bay, the Catholic Central High School boys golf team finished fifth April 13 at Racine’s Meadowbrook Country Club in the season’s second Metro Classic Conference Mini Meet.
Stemper carded a 47 and finished 12th overall. Sean Kramer finished at 51 for the Hilltoppers. Jack DeSmidt and Bryce Hocking each shot 53 and tied for 24th place. John Pum shot a 55 and finished 29th.
Racine St. Catherine’s Ryan Busey won individual medalist honors. Busey shot a 40 over nine holes.
The Hilltoppers finished with a four-man team total of 204 strokes. Martin Luther won with a total of 172.
Racine Prairie finished second (173), St. Catherine’s finished third (188) and Racine Lutheran finished fourth (198). Thomas More finished sixth (216), Shoreland Lutheran seventh (217), Kenosha St. Joseph eighth (223) and Whitefish Bay Dominican ninth (255).
“Overall, we are becoming more consistent as a team,” Catholic Central coach Matthew DeLorme said. “Our scores don’t reflect our true talent yet. We have the ability to drop at least five strokes per golfer by the end of this season.”
Stemper is a senior at Catholic Central. UW-Green Bay plays men’s golf in the NCAA’s Division 1, and is a member of the Horizon League.
Stemper signed his Letter of Intent on April 19, and accepted a tuition scholarship. DeLorme said Stemper will major in Business Management & Marketing.
“Throughout his years at Catholic Central, Jeff has done more than the average golfer,” Stemper said.
Stemper advanced to the WIAA Division 3 State Boys Golf Tournament last season at Madison’s University Ridge and tied for 16th with a two-day total of 164.
“He has a chance to get back to state,” DeLorme said. “He hits the ball well off the tee. He has great drive and a great work ethic on the course. He really helps him teammates a lot.”
Stemper advanced to the sectional meet as a freshman and sophomore before breaking through and advancing to state as junior.
Stemper earned First Team All-Conference honors as a freshman. As a junior, Stemper finished as the runner-up for Metro Classic Player of the Year honors.
“He looks to continue his dominance this year,” DeLorme said. “A bright future is ahead for this bright young student athlete.”
Catholic Central will play in its third Metro Classic Mini Meet of the season April 29 at Bristol Oaks Country Club in Bristol.
