The girls Catholic Central tennis team saw its first varsity action of the season Tuesday against Whitefish Bay Dominican.
The No. 1 doubles squad of Sydney Robson and Eden Kopac lost, 7-5, 6-4.
At 2 doubles, Cora Hulsey and Claire Schilz fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Because the team is small and comprised of just four players, they faced JV opponents at Martin Luther High School on Thursday, September 1.
The matches will not count toward conference standings.
Still, it was an exciting time for the Lady Toppers, and an opportunity for them to get more experience under their belts.
“The girls had confidence from all of the practices that we have had and won a number of matches and/or sets,” said Coach Maureen Lavin.
She continued, “They still need to work on unlearning some old habits and employing proper form for better results. However, they really did a superb job overall and were very impressive for their first match of the year (and for two of the girls, their first ever).”
Runners working out early season kinks
There is no denying that the boys and girls of the Catholic Central cross country team are pushing it to the limit.
That kind of effort has had pros and cons so far in the early goings of the season.
Their second meet was the Betz Invite held by West Allis Nathan Hale High School at Greenfield Park.
Coach Sean Birren noted, “While we still have a chunk of work to do, the kids took a good step in the right direction even though we still continue to go out too hard for our various current fitness levels.”
This included senior Brooke Bleser, who got out to a blazing start but was derailed by dehydration as the race got further along.
She crossed the line at 95 of 102 runners as the second Lady Topper to do so, at 25:34.
Senior Kelly Aldrich was number 72 with a time of 23:17.
Junior John Pum turned in Catholic Central’s lone sub-20-minute time at 18:37. He was the 62nd of 103 runners.
Senior Josh Muellenbach was 89th, finishing his race at 20:03, a full 45 seconds better than his previous personal best.
“An amazing effort for him,” said Coach Birren.
Though each team finished last, Catholic Central will work for a better result on Thursday, September 8 at Hales Corners Park.
