Did I love the movie Major League? Yes.
Have I owned both an Indians and Cubs hat growing up? Yes.
So who do I root for tonight, a lovable loser in Cleveland that represents the Brewers’ old division or a hate-able loser in Chicago that makes my skin crawl at times (see “Go Cubs, Go” rendition after 2008 Cubs’ sweep at Miller Park).
The writer in me says Chicago. Miraculous comeback from 3-1 deficit, first World Series title since 1908, the end of the curse, the eventual return of Bartman.
The Brewers fan in me says Cleveland.
Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle, Major League filmed in County Stadium, screw the rival Cubs and their pretentious, ignorant, hipster “fans.” The term “hoity-toity” comes to mind.
Sure, us Brewers fans have accepted mediocrity, and that’s not much better than the arrogance of Cubs fans.
Being a Cubs fan is a nationwide fad that ranks up there with the Dallas Cowboys.
At the end of the day, I’m going with past history and loyalty to friends and family.
I grew up watching not only the Brewers, but also the Cubs and White Sox on WGN. Harry Caray was instant entertainment, and the Hawk Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg are two of my all-time favorites.
My wife’s family and plenty of friends are true Cubs fans, you know, the ones that have actually attended a playoff game and don’t think it’s crazy to watch the World Series at Wrigleyville for $1,000.
The icing on the cake is my love for geography.
As a south side Burlington resident (I’m street), it’s a mere 75 miles via I-94 or even Highway 41 to Wrigley Field, and I’ve watched several games there. Great atmosphere, great view and great food.
Here we go, National League. Here we go, NL Central.
The Milwaukee Brewers are my team, but tonight the bigger person in me flies the W flag.
