The Union Grove High School girls’ basketball team got its third win in its last four games, defeating a solid Shoreland Lutheran squad 43-38 Tuesday.
Shoreland Lutheran came into the game 10-3 overall.
With the win, the Bronco girls are now 9-7 on the year.
In this seesaw game, Union Grove shut out Shoreland Lutheran in the first quarter to take a 9-0 lead. Shoreland came right back in the second quarter to cut Union Grove’s lead to one at the half – 15-14.
The Broncos put together a strong third quarter that gave them a 29-19 lead going into the final period. Shoreland Lutheran cut into that lead, but Union Grove held on for the win.
Wilks paced the Bronco girls with 19 points, with Acker adding 13.
Vs. Badger
Union Grove followed up the win over Delavan-Darien with a huge 57-49 win over Lake Geneva Badger Monday. The win allowed the Broncos to draw even with Badger for second place in the Southern Lakes Conference. Each team has a 6-2 SLC record and trail Wilmot by one game.
The Bronco girls had to come from behind in this game to get the win as Badger led 15-6 after one quarter and still led 30-26 at the half.
The second half was all Union Grove, though, as the Broncos outscored Badger 31-19 in that half.
Balanced scoring was a key to this win as four Broncos scored in double figures. Jordan Weidner led the team with 16 points, with Alyssa Acker tallying 14, Jo Wilks 11 and Katie Wendorf 10.
Nearly half of Weidner’s points came at the foul line where she was 6 of 9.
Union Grove shot 70 percent from the foul line, sinking 14 of 20.
Vs. Delavan-Darien
The Bronco girls hosted Delavan-Darien Saturday in an SLC matchup that had been postponed from Jan. 12. After a slow first quarter, Union Grove played three very solid quarters in a strong 66-40 win over the Comets.
Delavan-Darien led 12-10 after one quarter, but the Broncos outscored the Comets 18-9 in the second quarter to take a 28-21 lead at the half.
The girls extended their lead to 13 points after three periods – 42-29 – and then iced the game with a 24-11 margin in the fourth.
Nine Broncos scored in this game with Sara Petrovic leading the way with 14 and Wilks adding 12.
Petrovic also led Union Grove in rebounds with seven. Megan Lee grabbed six boards.
Union Grove connected on 17 of 29 free throws, while Delavan made 16 of 25.
Vs. Wilmot
Against the No. 9-ranked Wilmot Panthers, the Bronco girls played tough for three quarters before wilting in the fourth.
Wilmot led 13-10 after one quarter, but Union Grove cut that to two at the half – 27-25.
The Broncos still trailed by just eight after three quarters – 40-32 – but could not keep up with the Panthers in the fourth. Wilmot outscored Union Grove 18-2 in the final eight minutes to turn the game into a rout.
The nine points scored by the Bronco girls in the second half was the lowest output this year in any half for the team.
Neither team shot well at the foul line, with Wilmot making 14 of 28, and Union Grove just 7 of 18.
Wilks led the Bronco girls with 12 points, with Acker adding 11. Wilmot had three players in double figures, led by Sarah Vozel and Kaytlyn Eidson with 15 each.
