Going into their final Southern Lakes Conference dual match of the season, the Union Grove High School wrestling squad knew they would not get their first SLC dual win of the season.
After all, they were taking on Burlington, who came into the dual undefeated in SLC action.
The script played itself out as expected with Burlington defeating the Bronco boys 68-4 Jan. 26 at Union Grove.
Union Grove finished the SLC dual portion of the season 0-7, while Burlington improved to 7-0.
The Broncos one win came at 170 pounds where Kyle Boeck won an 8-0 major decision over Jesse Busch.
The match was much closer than the score indicated as Boeck led just 3-0 until the final 30 seconds when Boeck scored a takedown and turned Busch onto his back.
“He’s been wrestling well,” head coach Andy Weis said of Boeck.
One other close match came at 220 where Ryan White lost 5-3 to Tyler Vorpahl.
“That’s probably the best match I’ve seen him wrestle,” Weis said of White, who was filling in for Cole Ryan who was recovering from a shoulder injury.
The Southern Lakes Conference meet will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.
A total of 32 SLC wrestlers are ranked in either Division 1 or Division 2.
At 152 pounds, five wrestlers are ranked. At 145 and 106, four are ranked.
Every weight class has at least one ranked wrestler, with nine weight classes having two or more.
The Broncos do not have any ranked wrestlers.
“It should be a heck of a tournament,” Weis said.
