With athletes entered in only 12 of the 27 completed events, the Union Grove High School boys’ and girls’ track teams were unable to muster many points at the Southern Lakes Conference Relays held Monday at Delavan-Darien.
The Bronco boys finished eighth with 27 points, while the girls were sixth with 19.
Waterford won both the boys and girls events.
Head coach Mike Mikula noted that the meet was called before all events could be completed due to numerous delays throughout the evening and an inability to get the track lights to turn on. A total of four events were not finished.
“We timed one race in the dark,” Mikula said.
The Bronco girls did get a win in the 1,600 sprint medley which features a 400-meter, two 200-meter runs and an 800-meter run.
Emily Hebron, Cassy Goodrich, Madelyn Schwartz and Brooke Henningfield teamed up to turn in a time of four minutes 32.12 seconds, more than eight seconds ahead of the second-place Waterford team.
“They were going to be a part of our 4×400 relay, as well, but didn’t get to run it,” Mikula said.
The boys 4×200-meter relay team of Matt Robers, Justin Noll, Dennis Hebron and Andy Hatch finished third in 1:40.39.
Union Grove also got fourth-place finishes from the 4×100 relay team (J.K. Witkofski, Tate Koester, Brett Buri and Noll) and the 1,600 sprint medley team (Riley Mann, Kyle Martinez, Justin Delong and Ryan Mevis).
Individually, Koester was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-07.
Tom Burger Invitational
Both Bronco squads finished seventh at the Tom Burger Invitational held Saturday at Milwaukee Lutheran High School. The girls tallied 272 points, while the boys tallied 271.
“I thought as a whole both teams did really well,” Mikula said. “That was our meet during spring break. A lot of people were gone.”
The highlights of the day were turned in by Goodrich who won both the 100 and the 200. In the 100, she turned in a time of 12.99 seconds, while in the 200, she was clocked in 26.77.
The Bronco girls got the lion-share of their points from the short-distance running events.
In the 400, Hebron finished third (1:02.43), while in the 800, Schwartz was second (2:31.69).
The team also got a third-place finish from the 4×400-meter relay team of Hebron, Goodrich, Schwartz and Henningfield.
Kadi Walusay finished fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-06.
The Bronco boys scored points in many different categories, but had only four top-five finishes.
Koester had the best finish, taking fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-07.
Finishing fifth were Tim Christensen (800, 2:07.72), Justin Delong (300m hurdles, 46.50) and the 4×400 relay team of Andy Hatch, Hebron, Mevis and Martinez (3:49.40).
Both squads will participate in the Whitewater Invitational Friday, April 20.
Next week, they will be at the Pewaukee Invitational on Friday, April 27.
