“It was one of those moments you want to capture forever.”

First-year head coach Jordan Hein felt the magic after his Union Grove football team defeated Westosha Central, 24-6, on Sept. 13 in front of the home crowd.

The win marked the school’s first varsity football win since 2011, a span of 14 straight regular-season losses.

“It was a great showing,” Hein said. “The student section was insane. It was exactly what high school football should be. Our defense continued its strong play, and we had great balance on offense.”

Hein said all three phases played well. Though the win was nice, the kids are hungry for more, Hein said.

Running back Tate Koester ran for more than 100 yards, and J.K. Witkofski, who is fifth in the Milwaukee area in receiving yards, paced the club with 119. Quarterback Kyle Pohjola passed for 137 yards.

Pohjola ran and threw for touchdowns, and Koester added a rushing score. Union Grove took a 20-0 lead into halftime, and it was never really a game.

The Broncos improved to 1-3 and 1-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference and suddenly find themselves in the playoff hunt. Westosha dropped to 0-4.

Next up for Union Grove is the conference’s top offense, Delavan-Darien. The Comets are 1-3 but 0-2 in the SLC.

Delavan averages 31 points per game and reeled off 70 points in the season opener. The Comets can pass and run, and their brand of spread offense is hard to stop.

“We need to play disciplined football,” Hein said. “Each kid will have to do his job. Now that we know what winning feels like, we have to focus on improving every day.”
