Not surprisingly, the Union Grove High School boys’ soccer team’s season came to an end October 15 in the opening round of the WIAA playoffs. The Broncos lost to one of the top teams in the state – Brookfield East – by a 10-0 score in a match that ended after 68 minutes.

“There’s little doubt that was the best team we’d faced all season, but we knew they would be going into the game,” head coach Sean Jung said. “My boys fought hard, never quit, but we were just completely out-classed. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brookfield East wins the state title.”

Jung indicated that the game plan was to play with 10 players behind the ball and keep space tight in front of the Bronco net, hoping to block shots and force Brookfield East to shoot from a greater distance.

“It worked for 13 minutes, but once they scored their first goal, it becomes a moot point,” Jung said.

East scored 12 minutes 27 seconds into the game and added five more goals in the first half to take a 6-0 halftime lead.

With four more goals in the second half, East coasted to the win.

Season summary

Overall, the Bronco boys finished 5-15-1 on the year.

“(That) doesn’t sound impressive, but it’s one win shy of the most ever for the boys here at Union Grove,” Jung noted. “We shattered the boys’ goals-against record this season, giving up only 68 goals, and were tied or led in the second half of all but one conference game.”

The Broncos one their first Southern Lakes Conference game in several years when they defeated Burlington Sept. 26. Union Grove was 1-7-1 in SLC action.

“I have a lot of optimism going into 2014,” Jung said.
