Waterford High School’s Jakob Schappel is the second-leading scorer for the Greendale Ice Force boys high school hockey team through five games. Schappel, a junior forward, has scored two goals and two assists.
The Ice Force, which is comprised of young men from several high schools in southeast Wisconsin, lost its Classic 8 Conference season opener against Arrowhead, 5-2, Dec. 6 at Milwaukee’s Wilson Park.
The Ice Force (3-2, 0-1 Classic 8) led 1-0 after the first period before Arrowhead scored four goals in the second period. Greendale served three two-minute minor penalties and a five-minute major penalty in the second period.
Greendale scored again in the second before Arrowhead scored again in the third.
“The third period was a hard-fought defensive battle, much like the game began, with only one goal added to the scoreboard, an insurance goal for Arrowhead,” Ice Force coach John Kennedy said.
The Ice Force is comprised of 29 players from seven schools. Franklin, Greendale, Oak Creek, Union Grove, Waterford, St. Francis and Saint Thomas More each contribute players. There are 14 seniors on the squad.
Greendale competes in the Classic 8 Conference with Arrowhead, University School, Kettle Moraine, Waukesha, Kenosha, Greendale, Milwaukee Marquette, and Brookfield.
Schappel and junior goalie Owen Lemke are from Waterford. Forwards Alex Goder, Ross Peterson and Angel Schneider and defenseman Jared Verwey come from Union Grove.
Schappel scored two goals and finished with an assist in the Ice Force’s 6-2 victory against Green Bay United Nov. 22 at Wilson Park.
Lemke entered that game in the second period after the Ice Force’s starting goalie earned a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Lemke finished with eight saves.
“Owen came in and did an outstanding job to finish the game without allowing a goal during his play,” Kennedy said.
Schappel finished with an assist in the Ice Force’s 2-0 victory against Beloit Memorial Nov. 29 at Beloit.
Lemke has played in all five of the Ice Force’s games and carries a 2.49 goals against average. He has allowed six goals against 82 saves in 88 shots on goal.
The Ice Force played Tuesday at Waupun and play Waukesha tonight in a Classic 8 Conference game at Wilson Park.
