Union Grove High School’s David Leffler will end his Broncos tennis career in Madison.
Leffler, who plays at No. 1 singles for Union Grove, finished second Wednesday at the WIAA Division 1 Waukesha West sectional tournament and earned a berth in the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Tennis Championships.
The state meet is June 5-7 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.
The top four finishers in Flight 1 and the top finishers in Flight 2 in singles and doubles, plus 16 special qualifiers, advance from the sectional meet to the state meet.
Leffler, who is now 23-5, won his first match Wednesday and secured his spot at state. Leffler defeated Wilmot’s Jordan Anderson 6-2, 6-3.
“He played pretty well,” Broncos coach Mike Brannen said. “His win over Antreassian was probably the best he’s ever played.”
Leffler beat Racine Horlick’s Andre Antreassian in the semifinals. Brannen said Antreassian beat Leffler twice this season.
Leffler lost the first match, 3-6, before winning the next two, 6-3, 10-5.
“To come back and beat him (Antreassian) today was a big achievement for him,” Brannen said.
Leffler lost to Kettle Moraine’s Chayce Roecker in the final at No. 1 singles.
Leffler, the champion at No. 1 singles in this season’s Southern Lakes Conference Tournament, advanced to the Waukesha West sectional after winning a match Tuesday at the Waukesha South sub-sectional.
Leffler, the second seed at No. 1 singles, beat Waukesha West’s Adam Fowler 6-1, 6-2.
The Broncos Andrew Skalecki finished 1-1 in sub-sectional competition and did not advance to the sectional.
Waukesha South won the sectional title. The Broncos finished fifth.
