What is the easiest way to make it to the state championship in tennis?
Partnering with Union Grove senior Allie Miller.
The Union Grove doubles standout is attempting to earn a third consecutive trip to state with a third different partner.
Miller, with the help of No. 1 doubles partner Chloe Woods, is now just one win away from state after a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over Kenosha Bradford in a WIAA Division 1 Subsectional at Brookfield East Tuesday, Oct. 4.
“Allie would be the first player to ever play with three different partners and make it to state in three different years since I’ve been coaching,” Brannen said. “That would be quite the accomplishment.”
Other Broncos winners at the subsectional were Nixie Grajera, who won 6-1, 6-2 against Kenosha Bradford, and freshman Kayla Mauer, who won 6-0, 6-0 at Racine Park.
“Nixie started off as our No. 2 singles player early this year, but jumped to one when Allie went to doubles,” Brannen said. “The experience she gained playing two and one will help going forward this year and next year.”
“At four singles, Kayla can’t advance to state, but she is getting great experience,” Brannen said. “For her to play at sectionals is a great accomplishment.”
Janelle Shiffler and Courtney Weidenbeck also advanced at 2 doubles, knocking off Racine Case 6-1, 6-3 and Westosha Central 6-7, (7-5), 6-2, 6-3.
“Janelle and Courtney survived a very long tennis match,” Brannen said. “I was impressed with the way they fought and hung in there and got the win.”
Overall, Brannen was happy with the number of Broncos that advanced to sectionals.
“We got four positions through and three of those positions can qualify for the individual state tournament,” Brannen said. “We are hopeful that we can get at least one or two positions to advance to state.”
