Jake Kies didn’t waste time taking out his competition at Delavan-Darien Thursday, Dec 8.
The senior grappler squashed Joey Schlieger in just 15 seconds to earn the commanding pin at 195.
Kies’ was one of nine Broncos to score victories on the night to propel Union Grove to its first Southern Lakes Conference dual meet victory of the season, 51-27, over Delavan-Darien.
“Jake went out and took care of his business and didn’t take anytime messing around,” Union Grove coach Andy Weis said. “He secured the take down in mere seconds and finished off his opponent for easily our quickest victory of the early season.”
Junior Bubba Rewolinski took four minutes and forty-eight seconds to pin Eric Gonzalez at 170. Rewolinski, who was a WIAA sectional qualifier last season, has been an early season standout for the young Broncos.
“Bubba has had success bouncing between the 160 and 170 weight classes,” Weis said. “He still has to clean up a couple different things, but overall he does some of the smaller things well that puts him position to be successful.”
Sophomore Keith Storm-Voltz (182) was the other Bronco to earn a pinning victory, taking out Martin Bautista in 2:26.
Keith filled in a little last year on varsity in spot action and now seems to have found a spot here at 170/182 classes,” Weis said. “He just needs to gain mat experience.”
Joe Schuette, meanwhile, needed all three periods to get the best of Gio Sanson 12-11 in a heart-pounding match at 160.
Joe’s match was back and forth throughout,” Weis said. “The match was tied 4-4 after one period, and then Joe took an 8-7 lead after two, and fought off his opponent from there.”
“It can be tough to maintain the lead in the third when you know the guy is coming at you for the last minutes to get a couple more points. This is why we always preach to our guys to stay in good position which Joe did.”
Other Bronco winners against Delavan include Clayton Esch (220), Baron Masi (285), Zach Myers (106), Jon Sackman (113), and Jake Andersen (145).
“We wrestled well, although I thought we could have done better in other matches,” Weis said. “Overall it was a good first dual-meet conference victory. Hopefully we can build from this.”
The Broncos will certainly get their chance to build on their win this weekend when they travel to Beloit Turner High School and participate in the Bill McCreary Duals. The Broncos have done well at this tournament in recent seasons, winning the event in 2014, and finishing second in 2015.
“We have wrestled well at this event over the years,” Weis said. “But this year we have somewhat of an experienced team and hopefully we get into close duals, which will help kids learn how to win.”
