After battling through nagging injuries, Union Grove senior Riley McMahon bounced back with a pair of victories at the Parker Invite at New Berlin West High School Friday, May 5.
McMahon won the 1,600 with a time of 5:23.07 before winning the 3200 with a time of 12:12.32
Hannah Bryson followed McMahon’s lead with a first-place time of 12.83 in the 100. Terra McMahon also had a strong effort, finishing second in the 200 with a time of 26.25.
These strong performances helped the Bronco girls take fifth out of 12 teams at the Parker Invite. Waterford won the event with 182 points.
On the boys side, meanwhile, the team finished ninth overall with 26 points, well behind winner Wilmot (126). Senior Robert Walusay led the way taking second in the high jump with a height of 5-08.00.
Brenden Farmer (11.33) took third in the 100, while Kevin Hall (10:47.64) took third in the 3200. The Broncos also were strong in the relays with the team of Joe Martinsen, Matt Lacher, Samuel Bose, and Josh Meilad taking third in the 800 with a time of 1:39.62.
In the 3,200 relay, the Broncos team of Nathan Voge, Nick Gursky, Jake Anderson, and Hall took third with a time of 9:18.32.
The Broncos look to build off their performances today when the travel to Delavan-Darien for a varsity track and field tournament.
Tennis boys 2nd at county invite
The Union Grove boys tennis team had an impressive showing at the Racine County Invitational at Burlington High School Saturday, May 6.
The Broncos finished second overall with 19 points, well behind first-place Racine Prairie, which dominated the event with 42 points.
Jacob Genal led the way at 2 singles with two straight matches before falling short in the championship match to Prairies Andrew Lin, 6-1, -6-0. Finn Hourigan also took second at 3 singles, falling to Rohan Banheree of Prairie, 6-1, 6-0 in the championship.
In doubles action, the Broncos’ 1 doubles team of CJ Maurer and Nico Zelinger cruised into the championship match before falling short against Prairie championship, 6-2, 6-7(6), 10-4.
No. 1 singles performer Alec Dam rounded out the Broncos top finishers, knocking off Jacob Ludwig of Burlington. 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 in the third-place match.
The Broncos look to build off their strong showing today when they travel to Westosha Central for the Southern Lakes Conference Varsity Tournament.
Baseball boys drop three
The slumping Union Grove baseball team dropped three games last week against Burlington and Racine Case.
The Broncos dropped consecutive games to the Demons 4-0 and 4-3 on Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday May 3 respectively. The Grove then fell 6-3 to Case Friday, May 5.
With the game tied 2-2 in the sixth, Case scored four runs take a decisive 6-2 lead on its way to a 6-3 victory.
Luke Hansel, Bradley Hanse, and Logan Johnson each drove in runs for the Broncos.
Peter Rossman took the loss, giving up five runs, on six hits in five innings on the mound.
Another four-run sixth inning sealed the Broncos’ fate in a 4-3 loss at Burlington.
The Broncos, behind RBIs from Tyler Gamble and Logan Johnson, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. But the Demons stormed back later in the game to pull out the victory.
Demon hurler Trent Turzenski was the difference in Burlington’s 4-0 victory at Union Grove the previous day. Turzinski allowed no runs on six hits and seven strikeouts against the Broncos’ offense.
Nolan Rebernick took the loss for the Grove, allowing four runs on ten hits. Hansel led the Bronco’s offense with two hits.
Union Grove baseball 3, Waterford 0
On Tuesday, Rebernick pitched six strong innings and only allowed three hits, while the host Broncos handed Ryan Jungbauer his first loss of the season (4-1).
Johnson closed out the game in the seventh for the Broncos.
Union Grove scored two runs in the first inning and one in the fifth.
White and Hansel provided RBIs.
