Two Waterford High School golfers advanced to the WIAA Division 1 Sectional Sept. 28, although the team fell short of its goal of moving on.
Juniors Emily Powers and Samantha Mamerow were two of the top four golfers on non-advancing teams.
The top four teams, and top four individuals not on qualifying teams, advance to sectional play.
Powers carded a 91 on the Broadlands Golf Club Course in North Prairie. That included a 46 on the front nine and a 45 on the back. Powers had the lowest score of the four qualifying individuals.
Mamerow tallied a 97 (51-46) to become the third individual qualifier on non-qualifying teams.
As a team, the Wolverines placed sixth overall, carding a 404.
The top four teams that qualified for sectional were Kettle Moraine with a 314, Waukesha South/North/West (330), Mukwonago (345) and Catholic Memorial (351).
Head coach Jody Hanson said she was very pleased with the performance of her young team this fall.
“I’m extremely proud of how they did this year,” she said.
The team finished 6-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference, and took fifth in the SLC Meet.
At sectional action Tuesday, played at Naga-Waukee Golf Course in Waukesha, Powers carded a 102, while Mamerow fired a 111.
Powers tallied a 48 on the front nine, but finished with a 54 on the back. Mamerow had a round of 54-57. Neither Wolverine qualified for the state tournament.
The top two teams, and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams, in each sectional qualify for the state tournament.
“We did horribly at sectionals,” noted Hanson. “It was a long course and they had trouble with it.”
Hanson added that Powers and Mamerow were not happy with how they played, but will learn from it.
Powers would have had to shoot a personal best score in order to qualify for state.
