Waterford roundup: Wolverine wrestlers start season 5-2

Five consecutive match wins from 126 to 152 pounds propelled the Waterford High School wrestling squad to a 43-33 win over Westosha Central Tuesday at Waterford.

The win evened the Wolverines Southern Lakes Conference dual record at 1-1, and improved their overall dual mark to 5-2.

The five consecutive wins came from Kody Azarian (126), Max Fisher (132), Cody Dolata (138), Austin Christenson (145) and Mitchell Pallan (152). All either pinned their opponents, earned a major decision or a technical fall.

Waterford got three more wins by pin from Nick Lancaster (113), Cody Nannemann (170) and Francisco Mata (195).

After losing its season-opening dual to Elkhorn Dec. 1, the Wolverine grapplers rebounded by winning four of five duals at the Kettle Moraine Laser Dual Tournament Saturday.

The Wolverines lost to West Allis Hale 40-28 in the opening round, but won their next four duals.

They defeated Kenosha Tremper 38-28, Racine Case 76-6, St. John’s Northwestern 58-18, and Kettle Moraine 51-30.

Kody Azarian (at 120 pounds), Austin Christenson (145), Cody Nannemann (152) and Francisco Mata (195) all went undefeated on the day, going 5-0.

Max Fisher (at 132), Cody Dalata (at 138) and Mitchell Pallan (160) each went 4-1.

The Wolverine grapplers began their season with a 42-25 loss to Elkhorn.

Individual mat victories for Waterford came from Azarian, Sam Koch (126), Dolata and Nannemann. Fisher won by forfeit.

 

Boys basketball

The Wolverines fell behind by four after the first quarter against Badger Friday night, but then outscored the Badgers 27-15 in the second quarter and pulled away for a 64-50 win.

Senior Zach Fisher did a little bit of everything for Waterford. In addition to finishing with a game-high 20 points, he also had three rebounds, three assists and five steals.

Fisher hit five of Waterford’s seven 3-point shots, as the Wolverines were 7-for-16 from beyond the arc.

Greg Steffens added 12 points for Waterford (2-0), 1-0 Southern Lakes Conference) while Dustin Schindler pitched in nine. Chris Benavides had a team-high six rebounds.

 

Girls basketball

The Wolverines struggled to find any kind offensive in the first half, trailing 33-18 before finally falling at home against Mukwonago Friday night, 55-42.

The Wolverines dropped to 1-1 overall with the loss.

The two teams combined for just 10 points in the third quarter, but Waterford did manage to cut the lead by two. Both teams scored 18 points in the fourth.

It was a rough shooting night for the Wolverines, who hit just 12 of 51 attempts – and went 4-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Wolverines did force 25 turnovers by the Indians, compared to 17 of their own, and had 10 steals.

Stephanie Rank paced the Wolverines with 18 points, and she also had five rebounds.

No one else had more than six for Waterford, which came from Tiffany Stiewe. Jaycee Chart had a team-high six rebounds and three steals, while Madison Blair had two steals, two blocked shots and five points.
