When Stephanie Rank looks back some day on the game she scored her 1,000th in, it’ll likely be with the attitude that she had to work for every point.
Rank, facing a triple team from the Burlington High School girls basketball team and constant attention on the court Friday night, still scored 16 points in Waterford’s 64-44 win over BHS.
Rank needed 13 points to reach the 1,000 mark. She gained her 1,000th and 1,001st points when she laid in a putback of her own miss of a pair of free throws.
“I am very proud of Stephanie,” said Waterford coach Dena Brechtl. “She is without a doubt one of the most easy-going, spirited and talented players I have ever coached.”
However, with Rank working so hard for her points, the rest of the Waterford lineup stepped up as well. While Rank scored just four points in the first half, the rest of the Wolverines took over the scoring duties.
Alyssa Helwig had 10 first-quarter points, while Megan Jensen and Kristina Kamer both hit 3-pointers as well. Waterford claimed a 10-point lead after the opening quarter and never looked back.
“Our team is starting to put things together at the right time,” said Brechtl. “As Steffi sees more double and triple teams, I have had many players show that they can step up.
“Kristina Kamer is playing like a senior guard, Alyssa Helwig knows exactly how to pick up her game if teams are taking Steffi out of the mix, and Jaycie Chart has been our energizer bunny since day one,” she added. “(And) Megan Jensen has been running the show for us offensively, and without a doubt one of the biggest reasons why we are playing so well right now.”
Helwig finished with 14 points, while Kamer added 11 and Chart 10. Jensen had a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and added eight points.
