The Waterford Union High School boys tennis team improved to 5-1 on the year with a 5-2 non-conference win over University Lake School Monday.

Waterford coach Mike Schuster indicated he was pleased with how his team was doing, but also expected more.

“Even with the continued success, the goal is to get better and the team from top to bottom has room for improvement,” Schuster said.

The Wolverines won three of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles match against ULS. Winning were Jaime Mendoza at No. 1 singles, Nathaniel Brockmann at No. 3 singles and Ryan Engler at No. 4 singles.

In doubles, Konnor Beaulier and Ethan Derner won at No. 1, while Johnny Nelson and Zack Crafton won at No. 3 doubles.

In a Southern Lakes Conference showdown April 26, the Wolverines edged out Burlington, 4-3.

Waterford won 1-3 singles and then got a critical win at No. 3 doubles.

“All wins are a team effort, and there was individual improvement even in the matches where we came up short,” Schuster said.

Schuster praised senior Chris Kaiser at No. 2 singles, where Kaiser won in three tough sets.

“Even when he was down 4-3 (in the third set) he showed great perserverance by running off three straight games for the victory,” Schuster said.

Mendoza won at No. 1 singles and Brockmann at No. 3 singles, while Alex Bluemel and Crafton won at No. 3 doubles.

The Waterford Wolverines played Union Grove down to the wire April 27, but couldn’t overcome a three-run fifth inning by the Broncos in a 4-3 loss.

Waterford outhit Union Grove 13-6, but managed just one run in the first inning and two in the sixth.

No hitting statistics were available for the Wolverines. Sophomore Maddie Szalewski took the loss on the mound, striking out nine and walking four.

Tuesday afternoon’s game against Delavan-Darien was postponed. No word about a reschedule date was available.

Saturday’s Racine County Invite was also postponed due to weather. Waterford Athletic Director Mike Blair said it was unlikely it would be rescheduled.
