Showing their strength in many different events, the Waterford High School track and field squads won the Southern Lakes Conference Relays Monday at Delavan-Darien High School.
The Wolverine boys tallied 122 points to easily outdistance second-place Burlington with 76. The girls’ squad scored 108 points, 18 more than second-place Badger. All eight SLC teams participated.
Due to delays throughout the evening, and the inability to get the lights to turn on, four events were not completed. They were the girls pole vault, the boys 3×1,600-meter relay, and both the boys and girls 4×400 relay.
“We had, I thought, a very strong night,” Waterford head coach Nate Schreiber said. “I always consider relay meets a real indication of a team’s depth.”
Both the boys’ and girls’ squad won seven events.
The Wolverine girls won the 3×100-meter shuttle hurdle, the 4×100, the 800 sprint medley, the 4×200, the 300 hurdles, the long jump, and the high jump.
Victories for the Wolverine boys came in the 3×110 shuttle hurdle, the distance medley, the 4×800, the 800 sprint medley, the 1,600 sprint medley, the shot put and the high jump.
“I was very proud of our hurdlers,” Schreiber said. “They won both hurdle events.”
Individual Wolverine girls who won respective events were Sydney Lindner (300 hurdles) and Valerie Knurr (long jump).
Wolverine boys who emerged victorious were T.J. toy (high jump) and Brandon Miller (shot put).
Badger Quad
On April 10, the Wolverine boys won the Badger Quad at Lake Geneva, while the girls placed second. Besides Waterford and Badger, the other two teams who participated were Westosha Central and Racine St. Catherine’s.
The boys scored 123.5 points to Badger’s 84.
Badger won the girls’ event with 111.5 points to Waterford’s 92.
Schreiber noted that he had many athletes gone due to spring break.
“We had an opportunity for some younger kids to step up on the varsity,” he said, adding that the experience of running against other varsity athletes is valuable to the younger athletes.
Winners on the boys’ squad were Dylan Dessart (100 and long jump), Karl Chic (400), Tony Sustachek (800), Bryce Rudebeck (200), Brandon Schindler (shot put), Dustin Schindler (discus) and T.J. Toy (high jump and triple jump). In addition, the 4×800 and 4×400 relay teams were victorious.
Schreiber noted the Toy had an excellent day. Besides winning two events, he was a very competitive second in the 110 and 300 hurdles to the Badger’s Eddy Ruzga, who is a top hurdles runner.
The Wolverine girls were led by Jenny Gilbreath, who won both the 200 and the 400.
Other winners were Rhea Fiorita (3,200), Knurr (long jump) and the 4×100 relay team.
“For being such a cold, miserable night, I was more pleased with the competitive nature of each kid,” Schreiber said of both squads overall performances.
Both squads will compete in the West Bend West Invitational today.
Next week, they will participate in the Janesville Craig Invitational on Friday, April 27.
