With its best team score of the season, the Waterford High School gymnastics team edged Milton Feb. 2 in a girls’ gymnastics dual.

The Wolverine girls tallied 126.975 points to Milton’s 125.500.

“It came down to the last event,” head coach Carrie Buelow noted.

Going into the last event – which was the floor exercise – Waterford trailed Milton by more than 1.8 points. But the Wolverines outscored Milton 34.175 to 30.875 in the floor.

“We needed that to win,” Buelow said.

The team total was a season high for the Wolverines.

“They are peaking when they need to,” Buelow said. “The girls are cleaning up their routines. They’ve come a long way.”

As she has all year, sophomore Grace Kubiak led the team in all four events. She also won the all-around competition easily – 36.750 to 34.050.

Kubiak scored a 9.450 in both the vault and the floor, a 9.050 on the beam, and an 8.800 on the bars.

Ambria Noll scored her season high on the floor with an 8.900. That gave the Wolverines a 1-2 finish on the floor.

Milton won the vault and the bars, while Waterford won the beam and the floor.

Kailee Helget helped the Wolverines to a first and third in the beam with an 8.050.

The Wolverine girls were at Westosha Central on Thursday. They will participate in the Whitefish Bay Invitational on Saturday.

The regular season ends with the Southern Lakes Conference Meet on Friday, Feb. 17, at Burlington, starting at 4 p.m.

Buelow believes the team scores will continue to climb the rest of the season.
