In all but one Southern Lakes Conference golf events this season, the Waterford High School boys golf team dominated its SLC competition.
The pattern continued Tuesday at the SLC Meet played at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan, in spite of being down the team’s top golfers.
The Wolverine boys were 12 strokes better than their nearest SLC opponent, carding a grand total 328 to win the SLC Championship.
It was the second year in a row that Waterford claimed the title. Elkhorn was second with a 340.
“Back-to-back conference championships,” head coach Mike Harmeling said. “That says quite a lot about what the kids have accomplished.”
Waterford had three golfers in the top seven, with Kyle Pagac leading the way with a 79 on the par-70 course. Pagac had a 39 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.
Dakota Maney was two strokes back with an 81 (39-42) and David Zahn three back with an 82 (41-41).
The fourth Wolverine golfer whose score counted toward the team total was Andrew Schultz with an 86 (42-44).
Garrett Buri fired an 89 (42-47).
The Wolverines won the title without their top player, Zach Nash. Nash, who was leading the SLC in average and may very well have been named the SLC Player of the Year, is out for the remainder of the season with a wrist injury.
“He was having a great year for us,” Harmeling noted, adding that winning the SLC title without Nash “makes it that much more impressive.”
Zahn stepped into Nash’s place on the team and played very well.
Harmeling noted the team is deeper than just five players, adding that the junior varsity squad won the JV SLC crown on Monday.
Browns Lake Rider Cup
With all three pairings finishing in the top 10, the Wolverine golfers won the Browns Lake Rider Cup held at Browns Lake Golf Course Saturday.
“Saturday was another good day for the Waterford golf team,” head coach Mike Harmeling said.
Waterford won the event with a score of 226. Burlington had a 228.
The tournament is a mixed format tourney. Six holes are selectball (scramble), six are bestball, and six are alternate shot.
The pairing Andrew Schultz and Jazz Tulda, and the pairing of Dakota Maney and Grant Beck, each carded 75s.
One stroke back was the team of Garrett Buri and David Zahn.
The Wolverine golfers will compete in the Brighton Dale Links Invite on Saturday to close out the regular season. Waterford will be the host school for the WIAA Division 1 regional to be played at Rivermoor Golf Club on Tuesday, May 22, starting at 9 a.m.
