The Waterford girls pom team fell just short of a state championship Feb. 1 at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches (WACPC), Inc. State Dance Championships.
Ashwaubenon took home the championship for a second consecutive year, with Hortonville finishing second.
“It was a reality and it just fell to our team doing a great performance,” Deanna Schicker said. “It comes down to the judges and what they like in a routine.
The Wolverines, who were runner-up in the state championship last season, have finished no lower than sixth in the state in Schicker’s tenure as Waterford coach, making this year’s pom team’s third place finish another success.
“They went there and did everything I asked them to do with smiles and energy and a great feeling going into awards ceremony,” Schicker said. “They could do no different and that’s all I can ask for.”
Waterford’s third place finish in poms capped another successful season that included a fourth consecutive Southern Lakes Conference championship and a WACPC Southern Regional Division 2 championship.
The Wolverines have one more competition this weekend in Ohio before having a month off before tryouts begin in May.
“I was very pleased with progress that I’ve seen every year,” Schiciker said. “It comes down to the kids wanting to get better and their drive and continue to get better in the years to come.”
Now that Waterford has flirted with a state championship for multiple years, is a state championship in reach next season? Schicker is already excited to start preparing for the opportunity.
“I can always look at it as a chance to grow and see what’s out there and make a better routine for next year,” Schicker said. “Our kids weren’t disappointed and already have started thinking about what we could do better next year and are excited to try to go after it again.”
