Waterford High gymnastics coach Carrie Buelow couldn’t have planned it any better.
With the conference and state tournaments in sight, Buelow Wolverines unleashed two impressive performances last week.
Waterford finished second in the White Division at the Spartan Invite at Madison Memorial High school last weekend after trouncing Whitewater 130-94.550 last Friday.
“The team is performing better than it has all season,” Buelow said. We improved against Whitewater and then made a three point jump from there at the Spartan Invite. “
The Wolverines scored a team-best 133.675 points at the Spartan Invite, just three points behind winner Sun Prairie (136.6). The Invite consisted of two 16 teams, divided into two divisions with Waterford in the White Division.
Wolverine Samantha Dziak certainly enjoyed her time in the white division. The junior won the all-around in the White Division of the Spartan invite with a 35.725 and also won the balance beam with a person-best score of 9.375. Dziak also finished second on the floor with a score of 8.95 and third on the vault with a person-best score of 9.275.
“Sam has been our team leader for scoring all season,” Buelow said. “She is a solid around performer for us.”
Dziak wasn’t the only Wolverine performer to excel in the meet. All the Waterford performers made the podium, including Lauren Dziak’s fifth place finish in the vault (8.7), and freshman Amanda Whitford’s eighth place finish in the balance beam (8.35), and Isabel Saber’s 10th place finish in the floor exercise (8.450).
“The team overall played well with every girls making the podium,” Buelow said. “Amada is fresmhman placed in to 10 on beam and for her to place in a big meet as a freshman is huge because she’s been in two varsity meets is pretty impressive.”
The Wolverines also delivered a strong performance against Whitewater, with a 36-point margin victory.
The Dziak sisters led the way for Waterford, with Sam winning the vault (9.1) the floor exercise (9.0), and all-around (33.10). Lauren finished third on the vault with a season-high 8.75 and then finished second in the all-around (32.50).
“We took some falls on the beam that brought our scores down a bit against Whitewater,” Buelow said. “Overall I thought we had a good meet that helped us work on some things for the Spartan Invite. It was a confidence booster to go against a school like Whitewater that has similar enrollment. “
The Wolverines look to keep the momentum going this week when they travel to Jefferson Thursday for a meet.
“I’m feeling confident with the way our team is performing that we will perform well at Jefferson,” Buelow said. “Overall we are sitting well and maintain what we are doing,” Buelow said. “And that should get us to the sectionals and then state. “
