Haleigh Reindl finished second in the 800 with school record-time at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field State Championships at UW-La Crosse.
The state meet was contested June 2 and 3.
Sam Krebsbach, Josh Butscher, Jack Duerst and Sean Pritchard finished 11th in the 4×800-meter relay, and Pritchard finished 12th in the 400-meter dash
Olivia Busch finished 19th in the triple jump with an effort of 34-6.25, and the 4×800-meter relay of Jayda Obluck, Reindl, Shaelyn Mullins and Katelyn Puetz finished 24th (10:11.34).
Waterford coach Michele Sittig said Reindl ran an outstanding race, one in which she battled Whitefish Bay’s Cami Davre to the finish line. Davre – and Reindl – are among the state’s best distance runners.
“Haleigh ran a very smart race,” Sittig said. “She went out hard in the first 200 meters, as planned, and then settled into a comfortable pace.”
Sittig said Reindl led the race at 400 meters, with Davre close behind.
“Haleigh trusted her competitive instincts and knew she needed to leave some gas in the tank to kick with Davre in the last 200 meters,” Sittig said. “It was a battle as they kicked around the final turn.”
Reindl finished in 2:13.06 and Davre finished in 2:12.07.
“The girls did an awesome job,” Sittig said. “To have three freshmen and one sophomore qualify to compete against the best track athletes in the state is exciting.
“What a great experience for the girls to compete in La Crosse at the state level.”
The Wolverines’ 4×800 boys relay finished 11th in 8:08.18. Oconomowoc’s entry won the relay in 7:45.88.
Pritchard finished 12th in the 400 in 50.33, and missed competing in the final by 0.13 seconds. Aschwaubenon’s Jose Guzman won the state title in the 400 (47.89).
“The boys were focused and gave it everything they had at the meet, which is all any coach can ask for,” Wolverines boys coach Jody Johnsrud said. “I’m extremely proud of what they’ve all accomplished throughout this season.
“The exciting news is that all are juniors, with the exception of Sam, which means they have another year to try to improve and make it back next year.”
