After being shut out 18-0 by Westosha Central in season-opening action April 5, the Burlington High School softball team played much better ball in a 4-1 loss to a solid Union Grove team on Tuesday.

This Southern Lakes Conference game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Union Grove scored twice to take a 2-0 lead.

Burlington cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, and trailed just 2-1 going into the top of the seventh. The Broncos tallied two more runs in their half of the inning, and then shut the Burlington offense down in the bottom of the seventh.

Burlington, who was no-hit by Westosha, still struggled offensively, getting just one hit in this game, a single by Sarah Eulgen. The Demons did benefit from five walks.

Riley Hornickle pitched very well in the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits and walking just one.

Alice Fitzpatrick got the win for Union Grove, striking out 15 Demons.

With the loss, Burlington fell to 0-2 overall and in SLC action.

Union Grove is now 5-0 overall, and 2-0 in the SLC.

Burlington will play at Wilmot on Thursday, April 19, in an SLC game.

On Friday, April 20, they will host SLC foe Lake Geneva Badger at 4:30 p.m.

The girls face two more SLC opponents early next week when they host Elkhorn on Monday, April 23, and Waterford on Tuesday, April 24. Both games are at 4:30 p.m.
