Mayor says reconstruction project is slightly behind schedule

It looks like City of Burlington drivers – both residents and visitors alike – will have a little extra reason to be thankful come the holiday season.
Mayor Bob Miller confirmed that the work on Milwaukee Avenue is slightly behind schedule – by about a week – but crews were scheduled to start pouring concrete today on the northbound side of the street.
He estimated that the road would be completely open by Nov. 15.
“That’s the target date for now,” Miller said. “That’s everything.”
For the past three months, Milwaukee Avenue – the main thoroughfare from downtown Burlington to the north side of the city – has been in various stages of deconstruction, as workers first tore up the pavement on the southbound side, then commenced with utility upgrades to water, sewer and sanitary sewer lines.
The southbound side reopened two weeks ago, and Miller said Tuesday that residents had expressed happiness with the even driving surface and also the wider lanes.
The work on the northbound side has gone quicker, simply because there’s less utility work being done.
Miller said there had been relatively few problems, with complaints of road debris and rocks being kicked up off the pavement as the worst.
“I think it’s gone relatively well,” he said.
One difference has already been noted – the change in elevation between the northbound side (before it was torn up) and the repaved south side.
Miller confirmed that the two sides would be even at the conclusion of the work – which was being done to try and create a better entrance and exit from the Walgreens parking lot.
“It’s being done because of the Walgreens issue, to try and make it a smoother transition.”
