WALTER B. MAAS

 

Walter B Maas, 89, Presque Isle, formerly of Waterford, died Feb. 20, 2013, at Waterford Senior Living surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 27, 1923, to the late Thomas and Gertrude (Ullmann ) Maas of Waterford. He married Catherine Rucht on April 28, 1945. He was a lifetime member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Waterford, and a member of St. Rita’s Parish in Presque Isle.

He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #20. He retired as owner and operator of Maas & Sons in 1986. Walter dedicated his life to service: at St Thomas he served as Trustee for 25 years and was on the Cemetery Committee for 35 years. He volunteered at the Dialysis Unit at Howard Young Medical Center for 8-1/2 years. As a member of St Rita’s he served as Trustee for 6 years. He was a Racine County 4-H Tractor Leader for 33 years. As a member of the Wisconsin Water Well Association Wally was President for one year and on the board of directors for 10 years and was awarded a lifetime membership.

Survivors include his daughters, Pam (Jim) Herman, Waunakee, Linda (Everret) Waldron, Franksville, Teri (Steve) Penzenstadler, Rosendale, Pat (Bob) Gerber, Rochester, Margie (David) Druce, Portage, JoAnn (Ed) Chart, Rochester, Lori (Jim) Thomas, Burlington; sons, Edward (Bonnie) Maas, Poynette, Bill (Cathy) Maas, Spooner, Rick (Mary) Maas, Farmington, Minn.; a son-in-law, Steve Dlugopolski, Wisconsin Rapids; 30 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty (Richard) Rehberg, Burlington, Dorothy Bauman, Florida; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Daniel) Dooley, Presque Isle.

He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine; daughters, Mary Kay Maas and Trudy Dlugopulski; grandson, Thomas Dlugopulski; sons-in-law, Richard Waldron and David Fuerstenberg; brother, Fred Maas; sister-in-law, Bernadette Maas; brother-in-law, Chuck Bauman.

Visitation is Monday, Feb. 25, from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m., with services at 6:30 p.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. The Rev. Eugene Doda will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery Feb. 26. Mealy Funeral Home, Waterford, is serving the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial suggestions would be to St. Thomas Scholarship Fund, Howard Young Dialysis Center in Woodruff, St. Luke’s Cardiac Research Center in Milwaukee or a charity of your choice.
