The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater may have to change the name of its mascot from Warhawks to National Champs.
With a 7-0 victory over Emory University Tuesday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, the Warhawk baseball team won its second Division 3 national championship in school history.
The squad capped off a year in which UW-Whitewater captured national titles in football, basketball and baseball, the first university in NCAA history to do so.
The Warhawks finished the season 44-7.
An integral member of Whitewater’s championship run was senior outfielder Dylan Friend, a 2010 Burlington High School graduate.
Friend went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in Tuesday’s clincher, and he was named to the World Series All-Tournament team for his efforts.
In four World Series victories over Southern Maine, SUNY-Cortland, St. Thomas and Emory, Friend torched opposing pitching at a 9-for-16 clip (.562) with five runs and four RBIs.
Friend hit safely in each of the four World Series games, which were all played in Appleton, including a 4-for-5 effort against St. Thomas.
The 5-foot-9 lefty slugger hit .396 for the season.
