The girls Catholic Central volleyball team keeps rolling against conference opponents.
They are now 3-0 against Metro Classic foes, pulling out a win on the road September 24th against the Prairie School.
The Lady Toppers did have to fight their way back after dropping the first set, however.
Capitalizing on Catholic Central’s errors, the Prairie Hawks stole the first set, 19-25.
From there, Catholic Central bounced back, winning the next two sets both at 25-19 and 25-19.
The turnaround was due in large part to sophomore Anna Hackbarth and junior Lindsey Lehman.
Even when they had a big deficit to overcome in the fourth set, down at one point 12-18, the girls rallied before it got away.
They closed out the fourth set, 25-22.
Hackbarth led the squad with three total aces, and also pitched in 13 digs during the effort.
Leading the team in digs was senior Olivia Sobbe with 20. She ranks among Metro Classic conference leaders in overall kills, and she also led in that category in this match with seven.
Runners flip script
There was a change of plans for the Catholic Central cross country teams at their meet on Saturday.
Up until this point in the season, Coach Sean Birren encouraged his runners to find their own best paces and hold them consistently.
But at the September 26 Muskego Warrior Invitational, the squads took a different approach.
“The plan for this race was a little different than normal. We tried to find a couple of other athletes to race against form the start of the race, as opposed to the normal plan of an exact pace early in the race,” the coach says.
Overall in the 5,000 meter race, the boys fell to the bottom of the pack as a team at 17th out of 17. The girls, racing JV, were 10th out of 14.
Sophomore John Pum was the new Hilltopper leader, coming in at 74th with a time of 18:41.
Junior Greg Sember posted a 19:07 time, good for 87th and a new personal best time by 28 seconds.
Usual leader Gavin Clayton, senior, was derailed by dehydration and crossed the line at 21:14.
Senior Brianna Martin finished 42nd with a time of 24:53, one minute and thirty seconds better than her previous personal best.
Senior Kate Amborn also made a significant 30-second improvement on her personal best.
Robson wins finale
The girls of the Catholic Central JV tennis team finished out their season on a high note against St. Thomas More.
Sophomore Sydney Robson won her matches 7-5, 7-0.
Though freshman Eden Kopac and junior Isabelle Sobbe lost in doubles 7-4, 7-2, coach Jenny Smith noted their part in many great rallies.
