The Abraham Lincoln statue outside the Burlington Area School District offices lies in the snow Saturday morning.  On Tuesday, Jacob Hinds, 22, of Burlington, was charged with felony criminal damage to property for his alleged role in the vandalism. City of Burlington police said Monday in a press release that Hinds was found shortly after the vandalism was discovered. 1. Note to whomever did this: You may have thought this was funny. Guest what? No one is laughing. NO ONE is laughing!! Even your friends will recognize how stupid this was. You best run far and hide well because when you are caught you will have hell to pay.

  2. DESPICABLE! Vandalism is not funny nor is it an expression of your opinion. Its total disrespect for your community, for those who reside and love their town and country. When they catch your sorry bum, I pray there is NO leniency for destruction of Public property!
    – 18 U.S.C. § 1361 States “Section 1361 protects “any property” of the United States or an agency or department thereof, or any property being manufactured or constructed for the United States or an agency or department thereof, from willful depredation or attempted depredation.Justice Dept.
Seeing the Town of Burlington receives Federal Funding, one could only hope this statue would be applicable!
IF not.. what about HATE CRIME LAWS?
Low life’s.. crawl back under the rock you slithered from because you WILL be caught.

    • It’s in the City by the way and no the Feds aren’t even remotely involved. Old Abe’s goal to keep the Union alive didn’t include a national police force or overcharging for special protection for groups like pieces of sculpted metal. These thoughts are 1000000x more dangerous than some fool pushing over a piece of metal. Liberty is a little harder to hoist back up again.

      • Does the City get Federal funding for that piece of land Ole Abe called home? I doubt it would be covered under any law other than destruction of public property and vandalism. But, “maybe” the comment opens eyes of those who think their actions are “harmless pranks”!

        • You know that walker Medicare paid for when you were recovering from hip surgery? Remember when you were trying to pick roses (USA’s national flower) and you hit your head on the mailbox, then in anger you smacked it with the walker? Swarm! Swarm! 15-Life with Noriega and friends at the Fed SuperMax in Colorado. Sorry no more part-time Nanny jobs for you. Enjoy!

  3. I wonder if the person that did this realizes that NOBODY in this city forgets anything. This will haunt them until the day they die!!!! I would be more worried of the scorn of city residents over whatever the legal system is going to give them!!!

  4. I’m sure everyone has done something stupid when they were younger. Not saying it’s right but the kid didn’t murder someone chill out people the statue wasn’t damaged it was a matter of putting it back up.

    • Lauren, I find your dismissive suggesting this was somehow a merely a youthful indiscretion to be nearly as offensive as the act itself. No one suggested this was murder but if you fail to see the maliciousness of this unwarranted act of vandalism and its impact on the community, them perhaps you should consider having you moral compass adjusted.

      • Hey Dan and Jane what is DESPICABLE is that “some” dismiss or indicate it was “just a mistake” that the Burlington Police Officer who at 40 plus years of age gets behind the wheel of a car after a boozed filled night, runs into a mailbox and street sign (which could have been my father, mother, sister or brother), then continues to drive away from the scene of the accident until he is stopped and perhaps prevented from crashing again into someone or something by a deputy sheriff. Whose the jack wagon? At least this guy was arrested, cited, and will have to pay restitution. In addition, he will be alienated by the entire community, might as well move to Alaska. However, the fine Burlington officer will continue to patrol the streets of Burlington.

        • So…….. I have to ask this simple question to you PW, what on earth does a police officer getting a DUI and a 22 year old man, with a rap sheet a mile long, pulling down a statue for no good reason have in common??? NOTHING!!!!!! So why bring up the comparisons?????? I am assuming you are one of Jake Hinds relatives and/or good friends and you are merely trying to protect his reputation. Word of advice, things go way easier on everyone when you admit that you messed up and move on. The more you and your friends fight it, the worse it looks for the accused person in question!!! Just my opinion!!!

          • Hugh J,

You are correct there is no comparison. One is an officer of the law that is sworn to uphold the law and the other is a person with a troubled past according to you. As a tax payer in Burlington I expect much more from the officer!!! The person knocking the down the statute is not the person coming to my door in time of an emergency.
